First, understanding a foriegn languege is then first thing. Look at a child when they are growing up, they learn a languege first by understanding. The second phase is speaking the languege little by little. My American friends that are married to germans mastered the languege by being at home and speaking and understanding with their wife and german relatives first. The writing portion comes last and is the most difficult. Maybe I said what you stated on another post but my speaking skills in German are okay but not good enough to carry a full conversation. I am not married to a german and at my work, we have Germans but they must speak, write english to work with us. They must do all reports in my work in very good english and they must speak very good english. In other words it is the opposite than me going downtown and applying for a job in a german company. Go apply for a job at any American military base here in Germany and you will get the question. "Do you read, speak, and write in English in this level?" If you don't, you will not get hired in that contract
